Mary Baker Eddy predicted that the leaven of the Science of Christ would be continuously raising consciousness in three measures of meal: the sciences, medicine, and theology. That was over a century ago! So, when I began lecturing on Christian Science 12 years ago, I started looking for evidence of this leavening and discovered it everywhere—medical schools, hospitals, university classrooms, interfaith and scientific panels on the topic of spiritual healing. They all revealed to me a rapidly growing hunger for a deeper understanding of the role of spirituality in healing.
I’ve found about 1,300 medical terms in Mrs. Eddy’s writings—it seems she was using medical terminology to explain the metaphysics of this Science to doctors. She said doctors should be Christian Scientists because it equips them with a safe and sure medicine (see Science and Health, p. 198; and Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 252). And she had a number of doctors attend her classes.
Several years ago, Dr. John Peteet invited me to speak about Christian Science to his “Spirituality in Medicine” course at Harvard Medical School. Each year the class continues to grow in numbers and includes medical and theological students, professors, and doctors. I was thrilled the first time several people stayed after to ask me very sincere questions about how they could be using this Science in their medical practices.
