Why am I a member? In one word, gratitude. In three, Mary Baker Eddy. And in six, to support the Christian Science movement—the movement Mrs. Eddy founded to help free humanity from sin, sickness, and death. There is no grander and more imperative Cause in a world crying out for relief from injustice, pain, sorrow, injury, and disease. Christian Science turned my life around, and now I want to share this healing and transforming discovery with others.
Earlier in my life, before I turned in desperation to Christian Science, I had no confidence and low self-esteem. I was so intimidated by people that I would sometimes hide in the bathroom at parties. And I was afraid of public speaking. Through purification of my thoughts and behavior, by drinking in Science as revealed by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health and her other writings, and by claiming my identity as God’s image—in particular, by looking out from divine Mind instead of up to it—I gained the confidence that had been so lacking. I then went on to have successful careers both as a television anchor/reporter and a public speaking instructor at a major university.
What grateful, compassionate Christian Scientist would not want to throw his or her full support behind a God-inspired, Principle-governed movement?
