Before I found Christian Science, I would have thought a church was the last organization I would want to join. Sure, I considered myself a spiritual seeker, and I’d always had an intuitive belief in God. But during my teens I’d concluded that there was no way anyone could prove anything about God for certain. How then could I follow a set spiritual path, let alone join a religious institution, if I couldn’t be sure that what it taught was true?
That view changed, almost instantly, when I began reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Here, at last, was an explanation of God that not only made perfect sense, but that proved itself by its healing effect in my life. And when I tentatively started visiting a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I was at once drawn to the simplicity of the services and the sincerity and lovingkindness of the members. It was logical to me that since I could trust Mrs. Eddy’s understanding of God, I could surely also trust her wisdom in founding a Church to support and safeguard her teachings.
Becoming a member of the Church was my way of saying yes to Mrs. Eddy's vision.
