A week ago when I was preparing to serve at our Christian Science Reading Room, I prayed for a thought to take with me because I feel we should always be prepared to meet the needs of the public. Then I opened the October issue of The Christian Science Journal, and seeing no article referring to Reading Rooms, I was attracted by the title of the editorial, “Etc.” on page 51.
When I read in the editorial that at one point Mary Baker Eddy wanted each member of the Board of Directors of The Mother Church to “take up the argument” that people want her books, and will buy them, etc., and “to repeat this twice daily,” I was filled with awe that I was given such an immediate, specific answer to my prayer. It was a reminder to me that everyone needs her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and we can pray regularly to know that nothing can prevent anyone from finding it. I lost no time in sharing this at our Wednesday testimony meeting.
In answer to your request for feedback on our own journey since our first purchase of Science and Health, I will try to be brief.
I well remember the night I got into a long discussion about religion with a student of Christian Science. It led up to my saying, “Let me see that book.” The expression “Love at first sight” applies well, as I felt I had come home after reading the Preface. I went directly to a Reading Room the next day, studied that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson, and attended a service the following Sunday. I was committed from the moment I read the first page of Science and Health. I don’t know how long it took me to purchase my first copy, but I have purchased many copies since that night years ago.
