Love is all there is

From the September 2014 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Whatever disputes have taken place regarding the existence of God, few human hearts are not touched by the appeals of suffering humanity. Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.… when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I (Psalms 61:1, 2).

From earliest times societies have sought an explanation for the existence of a supreme “cause,” which can be appealed to in times of trouble. This has led some thoughtful investigators to consider whether we are fundamentally “hard-wired” for God. The Bible, which in its entirety illustrates man’s search for God, holds this promise: “There is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding” (Job 32:8).

With spiritual understanding, the old anthropomorphic concepts of God, which many have found to be unsatisfying and useless in times of trouble, give way to the true idea of God as infinite and capable of all good. An intellectual understanding of God can no more satisfy the hungering heart than a dictionary definition of wind can cool the heated brow.
