What does it mean to follow the Leader of Christian Science?

From the August 2017 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I began to explore Christian Science, my interest was simply to gain an understanding of God that made sense to me. I found it in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science. That was quite a few years ago, and her writings, and the church she founded, have never led me in any direction other than to embrace and follow the teachings of Christ Jesus—to learn more and more about the nature of God by earnestly and humbly striving day by day to let an all-encompassing love for God govern my thoughts, character, words, and deeds. And to be healed, and able to heal others, by doing so.

Jesus made the point that it was important to understand his teachings. For example, before delivering one of his lessons to “the multitude,” he said, “Hear, and understand”; and he later pointed out that “if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch” (Matthew 15:10, 14).

Another time, when many believed what Jesus said, he indicated that they would truly understand his teachings only in proportion as they embraced them as a way of life. He said: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31, 32).
