Christ Jesus began his ministry with a bold statement: “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). To repent means to change our way of thinking, which can seem pretty daunting, especially if we’re struggling with pain or fear or some kind of addiction. Human will is inadequate to release us from these challenges.
But Jesus wasn’t asking anyone to rely on human will. He was offering a far more effective way of gaining our freedom: Turn to the supreme government of divine Love, the “kingdom of heaven,” which is right here to comfort us, forgive us, heal us.
It can be quite a relief to know that divine Love is right here to help us. As we gain a greater awareness and knowledge of the divine laws of God, we begin to feel divine Love embracing us, uplifting and spiritualizing our thought, and purifying our character. Mary Baker Eddy discovered these laws of God Jesus taught and proved, and named her discovery Christian Science. She wrote, “[Jesus] demanded a change of consciousness and evidence, and effected this change through the higher laws of God” (Unity of Good, p. 11).
