BEHOLDING PERFECTION IN SCIENCE

From the October 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." So writes our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, on pages 476 and 477 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." And on page 12 she says of blind faith, "It is neither Science nor Truth which acts through blind belief, nor is it the human understanding of the divine healing Principle as manifested in Jesus, whose humble prayers were deep and conscientious protests of Truth.—of man's likeness to God and of man's unity with Truth and Love." Thus Mrs. Eddy summarizes the method employed by Jesus in healing sin and sickness, thereby indicating the method we are to employ.

To material sense, man appears to be material, entertaining thoughts of good and evil. Truth demands that we reject the evidence of the senses and accept spiritual man's perfection, as it exists in Science. Such demand and rejection seem radical to human sense; therefore it is not surprising we sometimes hear it said that we should accept the evidence as it appears. Christian Science shows that material evidences are not facts, but illusions; and it is being demonstrated that a knowledge of real facts is the only effective means of dispelling illusions. If evil were a fact, all our efforts to overcome it would be in vain. Through Christian Science we are enabled to prove infinite and omnipresent good to be the real and everlasting fact.

The Scriptures reveal God as good, the creator of a good universe. Humanity, however, not understanding it, has not used this fact as a basis for thinking and living, and the belief in evil has multiplied until it has assumed great proportions. Christian Science shows us how to undo error. This task can be accomplished only as we steadfastly behold the truth of being, revealed in Christian Science.
