SATISFIED

From the October 1941 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I do not ask that Thou, eternal Truth,
Shouldst make Thy steadfast promises more sure,
But that my heart may grow to understand
Till trust shall reign where doubt held sway before.

O ever-present Life, I do not pray
That Thou shouldst closer draw, for Thou art here;
But open Thou mine eyes that I may see
The nothingness of hate, of death, of fear.

Nor do I plead, dear Father-Mother Love,
For more than Thine all-knowing tenderness,
But quicken in me that unselfed desire
Whose one pure purpose is to heal and bless.

And yet, can I admit that Thou art All,
Whose goodness stands unchanged eternally,
And still believe that man, whom Thou hast made,
Possesses mind or aim apart from Thee?

Since Thou art all-enfolding Life, Truth, Love,
Man knows no need Thy grace hath not supplied,
Since all Thou givest, man must needs receive,
And rest in Thy completeness, satisfied.
