TRUTH'S REVELATION

From the August 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy felt no doubt regarding the divine origin of the Science she set forth in the Christian Science textbook. She says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 114, 115), "It was not myself, but the divine power of Truth and Love, infinitely above me, which dictated 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.'" She says that she would blush to write of the textbook as she has, were she, "apart from God, its author. But," she continues, "as I was only a scribe echoing the harmonies of heaven in divine metaphysics, I cannot be super-modest in my estimate of the Christian Science textbook."

Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science came in fulfillment of Christ Jesus' prophecy (John 14:16), "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." Her discovery was the effect of God's mighty self-revealment, which He enunciates through the action of divine law—His all-loving will. To the prophets and patriarchs of Scriptural record, God's messages may have been audible, but to our Leader the silent unfoldment of spiritual revelation was Truth's voice speaking to her yearning heart. It was the distinct message of the Father imparting the truth of being to one whose spiritual sensibilities were aroused to hear it.

The human mind cannot explain God to itself. Rather does God explain Himself to the human consciousness, and this He does fully and finally in the Christian Science textbook. In Science and Health, God interprets Himself and His perfect manifestation. Herein He declares His own allness and oneness, His creation of divine ideas, His ever-presence, His immaculate character, His control of the universe, His just and merciful law.
