WHAT IS CHRISTIAN SCIENCE TREATMENT?

From the August 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy states the basis of Christian Science treatment where she writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 259), "The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration."

A Christian Science treatment is not a formula. Treatment is prayer; it is spiritual communion with the one Father; it is the affirmation and realization of God's goodness, allness, and wholeness, and the subsequent denial of evil's claim to presence and reality. The Christian Scientist bases his treatment on the spiritual fact of perfect God and perfect man. This scientific truth, understood and utilized, frees from the bondage of materialism and its enslaving beliefs, of whatever nature.

"Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients," writes Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 411). She continues, "Silently reassure them as to their exemption from disease and danger." Since bodily conditions are the direct result and immediate effect of fearful mortal thought, it is necessary to allay fear in the thinking of the sufferer. He needs to be assured that man is safe in divine Love, thus forever hid from mortal sense. The patient needs to know the indissoluble oneness of his real selfhood with its Maker. When fear is gone and the truth is understood, the healing is consummated.
