THE WILL OF GOD

From the February 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The value to humanity of gaining the correct concept of God, hence of His will, can scarcely be estimated. The emergence of the true idea of God culminated in Jesus' perfect interpretation of God and His will and was shown forth in his healing and redemptive ministry.

God is eternal Life, infinite Love, omnipresent Truth. He is the self-sustained Principle of the universe, including man. He is the one omnipotent Mind, which is Spirit; and His will manifests the divine intelligence that lovingly embraces and governs all true individuality. The will of God is the will of Truth, the will of Love, the will of Life. It is the creative, sustaining, constructive, beneficent law of Spirit, which manifests God's purpose in the perfection and beauty of the spiritual universe. It is life-giving, health-bestowing, regenerating. In his healing of the blind and dumb, in his casting out of devils, in his loosing of the palsied man, in his feeding of the multitude, and in his raising of the dead, Jesus demonstrated the will of a loving Father for His children. Nothing but the pure goodness of God can ever be rightly interpreted as the will of God.

The will of God is the creative, impelling power which outlines and delineates man's being, his activity, his harmony, his health. Truth appearing to our consciousness declares man's individuality to be purely spiritual, perfect, upright, and whole. In God, the source of all true being, there is no destructive element, no erring sense, no discordant belief. The oneness of God and man as cause and effect explains man's full and complete obedience to the divine will. Man's whole being responds to Love's direction. What then accounts for the sufferings of mankind? Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
