Poems

Rebuilding

From the November 1984 issue of The Christian Science Journal

All gates, fire-burned, old wall but scattered stone,
Gave entry to those men who would despoil.
But Nehemiah prayed, then planned alone
To mend the breach. Soon others joined his toil
With strengthened hands and guided hearts firm set
Against those foes who called them to the plains:
"Come! Leave the wall for Ono." No one let
Himself be tempted, knowing God sustains.
So, up it rose. The people's joyous praise
For God's protection rang out from new height.
It rings for us, as on our walls we raise
Our watch, our work, our prayers for Spirit's light.
When facing common goals, can we afford
To not join hands in service of our Lord?
