Primary employment and "help needed" signs

From the July 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

People are thinking in new ways about employment. Those who watch employment trends say it's no longer uncommon for someone to have several careers in his or her lifetime. I know many people myself who have experienced dramatic shifts in their line of work over the years. I also know people who would say that although they have changed careers, their primary employment has never changed. Whether we're in the landscaping business, we are a student, or we happen to be looking for work, our primary employment is to be and do good. That never changes. So, by primary employment I mean the highest and fullest sense of what we do as children of God. Being and doing good is what being about our Father's business is all about. That means more than simply having a friendly attitude, as important as that is. Christ Jesus showed us that it includes doing the good works of Christian healing.

But are we qualified to be Christian healers? Is there a need for Christian healing? If so, where do we find it? For answers, let's begin by looking deeper into the concept of God as our Maker and employer.

God is pure good. His nature is good, His action is unceasing and harmonious, and His law maintains good as the sole reality of existence. God is also Spirit. And so, the man God made—which is our genuine and only being—is spiritual and good, reflecting only the qualities and action of God. We can honestly say that God is forever employing man as the ever-active expression of divine good.
