Christian Science nursing: a special calling

- Christian Science Nurse Notes

The role of spirituality in health care is a big topic these days. We’ve all read news articles about the effect of prayer on patients’ well-being. But praying to God for healing has been around for as long as we know—it’s not really a new concept.

Christ Jesus taught us to love God and to take care of our neighbors. He said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Christian Science teaches that God, divine Truth, does indeed set us free—and thousands of people have been healed through a clearer understanding of this Truth.

What does this have to do with Christian Science nursing? Christian Science nursing occupies a special place in Christian Science healing, by providing loving care and a supportive atmosphere for those who are trusting in God for healing. Having been a Christian Science nurse and now Manager of Christian Science Nursing Activities worldwide for The Mother Church in Boston, I’ve seen firsthand how putting the Science of Christianity into practice brings health to all aspects of one’s life. Christian Science nurses help patients recognize that health and healing are normal—they’re to be expected. That doesn’t mean there are never struggles and challenges or sickness and accidents to deal with. It’s times like those when many people find it helpful to have the support of a Christian Science nurse—someone who can give practical care when it’s needed, until healing is experienced and freedom is felt.
