During this season of heated political campaigning, in which candidates and parties are racing to gain power and the authority to govern, I find it helpful to remember the life and teachings of Christ Jesus, as well as the many other instances in the Bible that illustrate that “power belongeth unto God” (Psalms 62:11).
When Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:20, 21). Many years ago, I had an experience in which prayerfully yielding to this kingdom of God—which is already within us, accessible to our thinking—brought unexpected joy and a lesson about politics.
Just after finishing college, I traveled to a neighboring state to spend some of my summer gathering signatures to help a political candidate gain ballot access. I worked seven days a week, often ten or 12 hours a day, and had very little time for quiet thought and prayer.
