‘Sermons in stones’

- Practice, Practice, Practice

I love that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, found “ ‘sermons in stones’ and the smile of God in a rose.” There is even a story of her receiving comfort and inspiration from an incident with a rubber band! Praying diligently about a situation affecting her future, and that of the Cause of Christian Science, she paced the floor in prayer, waiting on God for direction. Then she happened to toss a rubber band, which she had wrapped around her wrist, onto a chest of drawers. As rubber bands sometimes do, it fell in the shape of a heart. At that moment, she is reported to have felt the “great heart of God, ‘the ever-presence of ministering Love’ (Science and Health, p. 567). She was assured that God had guided her to a right decision and that His plan would prevail …” (Calvin C. Hill, We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Expanded Edition, Vol. I, p. 332).

I had been praying about a situation needing healing in my own life. One day, I felt I just couldn’t pray any longer with inspiration or conviction.

I had been praying since very early in the morning, so I took a break and went to take a shower. Afterward, as I picked up my blow-dryer to dry my hair, I noticed that a small attachment on it, meant to direct the air for styling, had fallen off. I was surprised it had fallen off, but also thrilled. I had not been able to use the dryer correctly and was very frustrated about it. I had recently replaced my old blow-dryer, which had no such attachment, with this new one. The attachment was supposed to be removeable, but I had not been able to get it off. For several weeks I had been trying to dry my hair while getting accustomed to the attachment.
