Entrance upon a new year brings only gladness to the Christian Scientist, absolved as he is, through a higher concept of the truth of being, from the common belief that the passage of time as mortals know it means the inevitable approach of age and its attendant decay. In its dawning light he sees not the vestibule to the tomb of earthly hopes, but renewed opportunities for a higher demonstration of the truth revealed in Christian Science; namely, that "man, governed by immortal Mind, is always beautiful and grand.
Long ago Moses told his people that in time to come there would be raised up from the midst of their nation a great prophet to whom they should hearken. We read that this promise was made to Moses on mount Horeb, and that God said of the prophet who should come in the fulness of time, "I will.
Metaphysically considered, Christian Scientists are entitled to consider themselves direct descendants in the royal line of David and in the line of him whom Matthew calls "the son of David. " In "A Christmas Sermon," to be found on pages 161 to 168 of "Miscellaneous Writings," Mrs.
One of the prime requisites to the harmonious adjustment of the problems which from time to time present themselves in the government of branch churches, and societies, is a working knowledge on the part of the members of the rules and by-laws laid down by our Leader in the Manual of The Mother Church for the guidance and protection of its membership body. Some of these rules are general in their application, some deal specifically with the branch organizations, while others, though intended primarily for The Mother Church, may in spirit at least serve to point the way under germane conditions; but one and all these rules are the evolution of the apostolic doctrine that "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.
All who have been nurtured in the Christian faith can recall the story of Mary's flight into Egypt. Many artists during many centuries have been inspired by the dramatic aspect of this incident, and a well-known modern picture represents Mary holding the child Jesus in her arms and resting between the paws of the mythical Sphinx, while Joseph sleeps on the ground and the stars glitter in the eastern heavens.
We sometimes hear it asked why Christian Scientists in general do not identify themselves more actively with political and economic questions. Those who inquire concerning this assume in the first place that students of Christian Science are in this respect neglectful of the duties of citizenship, which would be a most unfortunate thing if the charge were true, but it is not.
Even to one who has gained but a slight understanding of Christian Science, the argument sometimes advanced by those who would disparage its beneficent work for mankind, that this teaching cannot be Christian since its exponents are a prayerless people, borders on the absurd. The sick, the sinning, the sorrowing, all who have found healing, help, and comfort through the ministrations of Christian Science, know that prayer born of uplifted desire is an essential factor in the blessings they have received.
AS one reads the testimonies of those who have been healed in Christian Science, or listens to them as given at our Wednesday evening meetings, the impression is received that following close upon the physical healing, with its attendant mental and spiritual freedom, is the opening up of the Bible as a source of boundless treasure. Religious people in general have always admitted this to be true of the Bible, but the widespread nature of human need goes to show that few have known how to avail themselves of the divine supply.
TRUE cooperation is an art based upon Science, and when so understood it is capable of producing grand results for humanity. It is an application of Christian Science which enables human beings to work together under the one Mind.
MANY years ago Mrs. Eddy closed a letter to a student with these words, "Love in abundance to children all.
