Chicago Branch of C. S. Association

From the November 1884 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Chicago band of faithful workers for Christian Science having elected Miss Ellen Brown Vice-President, those of our readers who know her personally may be interested to read the following extract from her letter of acceptance and advice to that body, inasmuch as it is evidence of her loyalty to our Cause, and promise of her perseverance in well-doing, against what, to any but Christian Scientists, would be fearful odds:

"Since it seems unavoidably my duty to serve as Vice-President of our branch of the C. S. Association, I accept the position, promising to endeavor at all times to faithfully perform the duties devolving upon me acting in that capacity. That the inevitable is the Divine I firmly believe, hence at no step of the way can faithful endeavor meet with complete failure when conformable to unavoidable duty. This will apply to officers and members of any society organized for good work, but especially to Christian Scientists, whose sole mission is the upbuilding of the Church of Christ on the earth.

"We have now raised our standard in Chicago. Let us rally around it and stand firmly, unitedly; on no account must we lower it one iota. Every obstacle that ignorance, and perchance malice, may throw in the way of our progress must be bravely overcome. We must work heartily for our Cause, cheerfully make sacrifices for it if need be, and be faithful and true at all times to the Principle it advocates. To us it must be dearer than aught else, or we are Christian Scientists in name only, and not in the Spirit, which is the only true service. The regularity of attendance at stated meetings of the association, and the interest manifested, will reveal our standpoint as members, and whether we are abiding in the understanding imparted so faithfully to us by our beloved teacher Mrs. Eddy. In the hour of temptation and day of persecution how shall we be able to stand, if we have not daily held faithfully to the understanding, and clung with trust to the promise, ' Lo, I am with you alway.
