KNOW THYSELF

From the November 1884 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If we have a true conception of God we are far advanced in self-knowledge.

There are diversities of ideas of God among the sons of men. A part of them imagine him cast in wood and stone, some a few inches high, others monstrosities as to size and shape.

The God of the Israelites, more spiritualized to be sure, was yet very like the heathen gods in principle; for he was supposed, like the heathen gods, to delight in sacrifices of sheep, goats or oxen, instead of wholly in the true sacrifice of practical love and mercy.
