JACOB'S LADDER

From the June 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The crowning glory is Love. The supreme Being is Life, Truth, Love, Purity, Beauty, Harmony, Perfection, typified by the seven colors in the rainbow. The study of these different statements in their order is Jacob's Ladder. Each statement is accompanied by angels, or the thoughts of His presence.

Wisdom is the masculine of Spirit; Love, the feminine. Wisdom is typified by the pure gold spoken of in the Scriptures, transparent as glass. Love is typified by the Sun. It is the broad daylight of Spirit, wherein all fear disappears. It is the light and heat of Soul, wherein thought expands and grows in spiritual consciousness.

Spiritual Understanding and Spiritual Discernment are the two highest faculties of Spirit, corresponding to hearing and sight. These are the faculties represented in Job as the Behemoth and the Leviathan. Spiritual Perception is a term used to express all the spiritual faculties taken together; as Man is used to signify the Universe. Spiritual Understanding is often typified in the Scriptures by Fire; as when Jehovah appeared to Moses in the burning bush. The Fire that consumed the sacrifice of Elijah was Spiritual Understanding. Christ came to baptize with the Holy Ghost and with Fire, i. e. Spiritual Understanding. The Holy Ghost, or Spiritual Understanding, came to the Apostles in Tongues of Fire.
