GRACE ABOUNDS

From the September 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is said that some assert they would have more interest in Christian Science if sin was not abolished as a reality in its teachings. We are told that sin abounds, and this assertion, that there is no sin, leaves man free to commit evil, without the restraining fear of punishment for wrong-doing.

Does not grace abound? In the world of mortal sense, sin seems very real, and there is no doubt that the punishment, which surely follows every wrong thought, will be just as real to the one who pays the penalty. If we would escape the penalty of wrong-doing, we must watch every thought. Looking for cause and effect in error, will not take us out of it; but denying all causation in mortal mind, will so relieve us. Cause is perfection, harmony, goodness. Effect must reflect all this; or else it is not effect, but is simply nothing.

The stir when Truth comes into the conflict error is making, destroying (as it does) all sinful desires, shows its all-power, and the nothingness of that which opposes it. Does mortal man suppose that because Christian Science affirms that as God did not make sin, and is therefore not real, He is robbed of His power? Error does not add one jot or tittle to Truth, but humanity defrauds itself by abiding in a sense of sin.
