THE NECESSITY OF ACTION

From the September 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the eternal reign of Spirit, ease is found in unceasing activity. There is nothing to induce or affirm any other condition. Envy has not entered to teach that life is dependent upon expressions of Mind, called matter. Hence, all things follow the direction of wisdom. Activity is the real, Love the Spirit which incites to action, and harmony is complete.

According to the divine law taught by Jesus, each of God's creatures should be constantly contributing to the happiness of every other idea. The law of love, which is the law of wisdom, is such that he who gives most receives most. Who serves most faithfully the welfare of his fellow men, receives most of gratitude and love. This is according to the saying of Jesus in Mark x. 44: "Whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be the servant of all."

He who contributes but little to the welfare of others, seeing the favor of him who contributes much, is envious. He would be esteemed without earning it honestly. He seeks to become famous by climbing up some other way, and blocking up the true way, the way of life and love.
