If the experience of one who practised medicine for twelve years, and then came to Christian Science, may possibly help others who are in sorrow or trouble over the suffering of some loved one, perhaps quite without hope from medical aid; if it may be the means of bringing to others a fractional part of the joy and blessing that Christian Science is to me and my family now, it will be one more gift of love from the infinite storehouse, and an offering of gratitude to our Leader, who revealed this saving truth to the present age.
I have closely watched many instances of the power of Truth in Christian Science to heal disease. One was the restoration to health of my own daughter almost from the verge of the grave. Up to the age of four years, there could probably not have been found many more robust or healthy children; then came an attack of whooping cough lasting nearly twelve months, with persistent vomiting and consequent emaciation and mal-nutrition, resulting in a delicate, weak, peevish, pampered child.
For about two years there was no definite disease; but gradually symptoms pointing to bone disease appeared, either spinal or hip. Soon there could no longer remain any doubt; the left hip was found to be distinctly diseased and the usual iron splint for hip disease was applied, fixing the leg rigidly, in line with the trunk. Walking, with crutches and with a three-inch block on the right boot, so that the weight was carried on the right leg, was permitted; but in a very few weeks the right hip joint developed active disease also. For many months the child was fastened, from shoulders to ankles, in a double iron splint, lifted from bed to couch, and couch to spinal carriage, or vice versa, never being allowed even to stand.
