Two children were taken ill in the family, where I, with my daughter of seven, boarded last winter. Materia medica at first pronounced one case measles, the other, the result of vaccination. In nine or ten days the third child of the family and my child were both taken very ill with high fever, and the whites of their eyes were bloodshot; indeed, they were so ill that my child could not raise her head from the pillow.

A consultation of doctors then pronounced it the most violent form of malignant scarlet fever, and the three children dangerously ill. They had not seen my little girl, as we were upstairs where I had rooms in the flat above, although I took my meals in this family.

I immediately telephoned a practitioner who arrived about two o'clock in the afternoon, and although she found my little girl in a stupor, by half past four she was able to be up and dressed so that I could hold her in my lap. At five o'clock the practitioner left, and she had but gone when the landlady came to my door and told me I could not remain, that the child undoubtedly had the scarlet fever, and that to wait until morning would be too late.
