"ONE THING THOU LACKEST"

From the July 1903 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To-day my heart was strangely stirred,
I caught a deeper thought that gave
New meaning to the written Word,
New love to him who came to save.

"One thing thou lackest!" how it thrilled
My wakened conscience, e'en to pain,
My heart with questionings was filled,
Of heavenly loss, of earthly gain.

And then the bravely spoken Word,
Lifted my thoughts like angels' wings,
And in my consciousness I heard
A call divine to higher things.

But there must be a crowning gift,
Though Faith may seem my guiding star
And Hope her joyful pinions lift
To bear her messages afar.

"One thing thou lackest!" Then I hear
A gentle message from above,
"There is a name that casts out fear;
The thing thou lackest, child, is Love."
