In early childhood my eyes became diseased, and I was...

From the March 1907 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In early childhood my eyes became diseased, and I was treated by different doctors, who disagreed as to the nature of the trouble. I also failed in health,—in fact, became a physical wreck. As I received no benefit from my home doctors, I was treated by one of the most noted oculists in the United States, but he also failed to give me any relief. I then tried many different oculists, physicians, and surgeons, and was a patient in sanitariums and hospitals. I traveled a great deal, and while on the Pacific coast became totally blind. I was treated by one of the most skilful oculists in that region, who called in a noted surgeon to assist him in locating the disease. I finally could distinguish a ray of light for a moment or two at a time, but could not see any object. This oculist said I would have no further use of my eyes. I was then brought back to my native State, where two prominent oculists said that nothing could be done for me. I then visited celebrated springs, whose waters were said to be a sure cure for the eyes. While there I became totally blind the second time, the oculist then treating me saying I would never have the use of my eyes again. I, however, became so that I could see a ray of light for a moment or two at a time. I did not give up the oculists, physicians, and surgeons, but they all gave me up, saying there was nothing more that could be done for me. I had been raised very carefully in an orthodox church, but was utterly heartbroken and discouraged at the prospect of a life of total blindness, and earnestly prayed God to relieve me from this life, which seemed worse than death.

It was just at this time that Christian Science was brought to my notice. I at once began treatment, and in three months' time Truth had done for me what materia medica, had failed to do in over twenty years,—it had healed my blind eyes and every other disease with which I was afflicted. I took my first treatment in Christian Science the last of June, 1896, and continued for three months, and from that time to this I have had no further treatment for my eyes, nor have I used any material remedy, and today my eyes are strong and well, as is every organ of my body. My father spent between ten and fifteen thousand dollars for medical treatment, travel, etc., but in spite of all I was given up to a life of total blindness. I spent sixty dollars for Christian Science treatment, and three dollars for a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and was perfectly healed. Christian Science, the knowledge of God, restored me to a life of health, peace, and harmony.
