Testimonies of Healing

To discover that God is an ever-present power for good...

From the March 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To discover that God is an ever-present power for good is a revelation indeed to one brought up in the old way. In my own case, as mental and physical misery increased, I withdrew farther and farther from a God who would, as I had been told, willingly inflict such punishment on His children. I ceased to pray: in my heart there was nothing but bitterness toward God and for most of humanity. It was in this frame of mind that I selfishly turned to Christian Science as a last resort. I turned to it only because I wanted to live,—to live materially, for in my ignorance I thought that happiness came through the physical senses. The patience of those who took my hand, and step by step led me out of the wilderness of despair, I cannot describe, nor can I express my gratitude for what they have done for me. Little by little the mountains of error have been rooted from my consciousness, such as self-love, selfjustification, will-power, fear, hate, ambition, etc. Through the help of faithful practitioners, and the study of Mrs. Eddy's wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I have learned that in proportion as we reflect Love and Truth, express forgiveness and unselfishness, bend our human wills to the will of an all-wise Father, just so much harmony and health will we bring out in our bodies. With change of thought came refreshing sleep in place of insomnia in its worst form; in place of a disturbed condition of the nerves came calmness; in place of a constantly throbbing and confused brain came clearness of thought, and in place of despair came the realization that heaven is a condition attainable right here upon earth, not a place afar off.

It is now over three years since I began the study of Mrs. Eddy's book, and as I grasp the truth that it contains, life becomes more glorious and my appreciation of its author increases. Through the teachings of the Christian Science text-book I have learned to love the Bible, which before was to me a jumble of contradictions; I have learned to strive continually to purify my thoughts and to walk in the footsteps of the Master, Christ Jesus.
