Testimonies of Healing

The testimonies I read in the periodicals and hear at...

From the May 1908 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The testimonies I read in the periodicals and hear at the Wednesday evening meetings are so very helpful to me that I would like to tell just a little of the great benefit I have received since coming into Christian Science, four and a half years ago. It was not very long after hearing of Christian Science before I decided to give it a trial, although, like many others, I had very little faith in it at that time. I had been trying many material remedies for a complaint which was very bad at times, and according to materia medica many people are never cured of it. My health had never been very good, but I can truly say that my outlook on life has changed wonderfully since coining into Christian Science, and my friends all tell me how much younger I look. Christian Science has taught me that no asserted material laws can have any power over me; that man is made in the image and likeness of God, and that I must reflect this image in my daily life. According to man-made theories I had inherited lung trouble, as my parents and a brother had died of that disease; but now I know, as the 91st Psalm tells me, that I may dwell "in the secret place of the most High," and that no plague can come nigh my dwelling.

I find Christian Science to be a very practical religion; it has given me a better understanding of God, infinite good, divine Love. I have more faith in God, and I know it is not His will that I should suffer in any way. I used to think suffering was good for me, but my thoughts have been completely changed, and I thank God for it. I had always loved the Bible, and had been a faithful member of an orthodox church all my life. I used to think I could never give up the communion, but I now know that no material elements are necessary; that I can have spiritual communion with God every moment of my life.

I have had many proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science over discords of both mind and body, and I know that I must, as Mrs. Eddy says, "stand porter at the door of thought" (Science and Health, p. 392), and that divine Love will meet every human need. I feel very grateful that we have such a wonderful book as Science and Health, which is truly a "Key to the Scriptures." With it we can understand many passages of Scripture which before seemed vague and hard. I thought this book cost a good deal when I was asked to buy it, but now I cannot estimate its value, for the Bible and Science and Health are my two greatest treasures. It enables me to understand better the mission of Christ, and teaches me how to overcome evil with good. To Mrs. Eddy I cannot express my gratitude in words, but hope to go on proving by my daily life that I am striving to live up to her teachings. The loving example she has shown us should encourage us to follow in her steps, and to know that divine Love is conquering all error, for each lie has been met with the voice of Truth. Her name will be justly handed down to the ages to come as a pioneer in Truth's Cause, and thousands more will yet rise up and call her blessed.
