Testimonies of Healing

Five and a half years ago I picked up a Christian Science Journal...

From the May 1909 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Five and a half years ago I picked up a Christian Science Journal in the weeds, at Monrovia, Cal. The testimonies arrested my attention, and led to the purchase of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I had been reading the book about four months when my mother suddenly passed on, and divine Love, as our beloved Leader has made known to us through Science and Health, wonderfully sustained me. I realized then that Life, Principle, is not in the material body, and never had been; that man reflects Mind and coexists with God. In the weeks, months, and years that have followed I have felt a mother's love in the understanding of God as our loving Father and Mother. Bereft of all human companionship, this spiritual understanding of Life meant peace and strength, and if Christian Science had done nothing more than this, I should say many times with heart overflowing, "God bless dear Mrs. Eddy."

But this is not all. The study of Science and Health in search of mental harmony and freedom from sin, healed. me physically of a painful disorder of eight years' standing, of periodical bilious attacks, and of eye trouble. Since striving to practise daily what I study in the Bible and Science and Health, as outlined by the Quarterly, this newfound truth has been a preventive more than a cure, for I find myself continuing to be "insensibly" well (Science and Health, p. 383). Christian Science has healed me of a quick temper, a resentful, malicious disposition, and is enabling me to put under foot self-will, self-love, and self-justification. It has also given me a home akin to heaven, in place of one of utter discord. While I am grateful for all physical benefits derived from my efforts to live Christian Science, I am infinitely more grateful for great harmony, love, and peace; more grateful for the Christianizing of thought and impulse, and for the heaven here and now which is being unfolded in the truth. The Christian Science Quarterly has been a priceless boon to me in acquainting me with the Bible; in teaching me to love it; and in directing me in an intelligent study of it. I was an orthodox church-member for twelve years, but read my Bible only occasionally from a sense of duty, because then I could not understand it. Now, however, with Science and Health to show me its spiritual import, it is my daily study. I am also deeply grateful for the Journal and Sentinel. Several times they have come to me at a crisis and brought messages which enabled me to overcome some obstructing sinful thought. They are indeed "ministering angels."

One who has tasted of the "water of life," which is so freely offered the world today through our dear Leader, longs to purify daily living, and so manifest the love of Christ that he' may bring others into the "glorious liberty of the children of God." In the "exchange" column of a recent Sentinel I read this: "No agency for conversion is so potent as a life in which Jesus Christ dwells in the fulness of his grace." It will be seen by an investigation of Christian Science that this is precisely the evangelistic work which Science and Health is doing all over the globe. I thank our Father in heaven for the redemptive message of Christian Science; and for His "good and faithful servant," Mrs. Eddy, who has, amid a world of opposition and prejudice, patiently and humbly stood in "the secret place of the most High," doing the bidding of the Almighty. Surely a great multitude is rising up to call her blessed.
