With the hope that it may be of help or encouragement to others, I gladly give my testimony to what Christian Science has done for me. It was over four years ago that I awoke one morning to find that I was unable to make myself understood, and deprived of the power to raise myself from the bed. A physician was called, and he diagnosed the trouble as of a most serious nature. I had previously had two attacks, the first depriving me of speech and the use of my right arm and hand, from which I had never fully recovered, although I regained my speech and For a few days seemed to make some gain otherwise, and the two physicians in attendance spoke hopefully of recovery; but it was only a temporary relief. At the end of three weeks, during which time I had been unable to lift my head from the Pillow, another unsuccessful attempt was made by the physicians to relieve my helplessness. A consultation was held, and the family was informed that they saw no hope of my recovery, that it was only a question of time. I had noticed that my eyesight was failing, and feeling that it was my last illness, had made arrangements regarding my property.
Confident that they were now running no risk in abandoning medicine, and knowing of others who had received help through Christian Science, my friends decided they would not let me pass away without a trial of its efficacy. Accordingly, they telephoned (April 7, 1905) to a practitioner in a near-by city for absent treatment that night, asking for a visit as soon as possible. The practitioner arrived the next morning and remained through the day, giving renewed hope to all by his confident assurance that God could and would restore me to health. A change for the better was soon noticed, but it was a joyful surprise to all when the following day I sat up on the edge of the bed for fifteen minutes or more, then lay down and slept for two hours, sitting up again for a few minutes before going to sleep for a quiet night's rest. I continued to improve steadily, eating whatever I wished without any ill effects. Three days later, I sat up in a chair for three hours, and in a few days more was about the house. When I appeared on the street, a few weeks later, it seemed almost a miracle to my neighbors, as they had been told they would never see me about town again and might be prepared to hear of my departure any day. I was greatly reduced in strength and flesh, but in due time recovered both. I was at the same time permanently cured of a bowel trouble of years standing. I am now nearly seventy-six years of age, in better health than for many years, and with but one exception have not taken a dose of medicine of any kind since the above treatment.
We are truly thankful to God for His loving-kindness, and also for the knowledge of Christian Science, through which one may be healed of sickness as well as saved from sin. — Harrington, Me.
