It is my heart's desire to give an expression of the gratitude which fills me for all that Christian Science has done for me. In October, 1908, while in Braunschweig, I was taken ill with severe kidney trouble, which became most alarming. The family physician, as well as a specialist, declared that the conditions would probably necessitate an operation. The head physician of the hospital, who was present during the consultation, agreed with this statement, and so I was taken to the hospital early in December. Before a final decision could be arrived at regarding the operation to be performed,—the complications making the matter very difficult, together with the fact that I was greatly weakened physically through continuous illness,—suddenly another extremely painful trouble appeared in the shape of an abscess, which required an immediate operation. It was performed, but my strength was so reduced that the physicians declared with one accord that I could not possibly recover, and that death must be expected within a short time.
Then, in the hour of greatest need, help came through Christian Science. The blessings which this teaching has brought to others were not unknown to me, as my daughter, who now lives in America, had become an ardent adherent of Christian Science and had asked me repeatedly to accept its teaching; yet my attitude regarding it was one of skepticism. Now, while I was standing on the brink of the grave, this cablegram kept coming from America. "Try Christian Science." Help was asked for me here in Hannover, and I was ministered to with the greatest devotion. Although the physicians said that it might prove fatal to carry me from the hospital to my rooms, this was done in the beginning of January, 1909, without ill effects, under the protection of Christian Science. With one week's treatment the awful pain which had been torturing me constantly for three months, left me, and from that moment faith in the power of divine Truth was firmly established in me.
Today I am in perfect health physically and mentally, and I wish to give my heartfelt thanks to God, and also to Mrs. Eddy; furthermore, I wish to express my gratitude for the work which was so faithfully done for me. May Christian Science become to every one, as it has to me, a source of rich blessing.
