When I first heard about Christian Science, a few years ago, I was an avowed agnostic. The teachings of the church in which I had been brought up had not satisfied, and on asking two old clerical friends some important questions as to God and the Christ, their answers served to get me into the vicar's pews of their respective country churches, where each preached a sermon at me. That method did not answer my questions, but the reading of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, did, and it has literally proved to be a "key," as it has unlocked for me the mines of wealth in the Bible. When I first began to read Science and Health, I was much astonished to find that I could understand but very little, and could only read some two or three pages every evening. However, after nearly four weeks of daily reading of the book, the true concept of Christ came to my consciousness, and I was unknowingly healed of a very bad and painful varicose vein which had been pronounced by three doctors to be incurable and in a dangerous state.
For the first time in my career I then had a glimpse of what true happiness means. After such a proof, it was quite impossible to doubt that Christian Science is the truth for which I had been searching for nearly forty years, and that finding it was the first stepping-stone to a complete change of character and to the giving up of everything for Christian Science work. I am deeply thankful to God for giving us Christian Science, and I should like to express my profound sense of gratitude to our Leader. Mrs. Eddy, for Science and Health and all her other writings, and for our publications, the study of which is giving me a daily increasing share of "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God," and His peace.
