It is a source of gratification to me to give my brief experience in Christian Science. On the first day of January, 1911, 1 attended a Christian Science service as an escort to a friend who was visiting my home, and had no thought of ever becoming interested; but I was so much impressed with the earnestness and unity of thought which prevailed, that I have been a constant attendant since that date, and also have read most of the authorized literature upon this great subject.
Physical benefits had not been considered by me until I attended two of the Wednesday evening meetings and listened to many earnest and convincing testimonies; but as I had been constantly under medical treatment for chronic stomach trouble for more than twelve years, I promptly decided to place my case in the hands of a Christian Science practitioner and have her submit it to the great Physician. About the middle of January I asked a lady to help me, and she readily responded. She gave me three treatments in the course of about ten days, and I was completely healed of that long-standing and distressing trouble. At the same time the taste for tobacco left me, after I had been a constant smoker for many years. I have not smoked nor had any desire for tobacco since, and I have taken no thought in regard to what or when I should eat, as I had to do before looking into Christian Science, for everything I eat now agrees with me. The instruction given me as to reading Science and Health and the Bible, advanced me greatly in that direction.
I would also like to speak of what appeared to me a miracle. My daughter had been operated on twice for internal ailments, and during the month of March, 1911, while traveling in the western part of the United States, she was quite feeble and took occasion to consult three physicians, each of whom advised an early operation. She was brought to my home in Philadelphia, March 27, an invalid. She was then examined by a fourth physician, who said an immediate operation was absolutely necessary, and he arranged to call for her the next day and take her to a hospital to be operated upon. I was advised of this arrangement late that afternoon, and I at once protested and told her of what Christian Science had done for me. She insisted that her case was so different that nothing but an operation could relieve her, but said she would consider my advice during the night. Early the next morning she said she would defer the operation, and asked me to call a Christian Scientist and to postpone the ambulance engagement. I telephoned to a practitioner and she called about ten o'clock. My daughter was healed at the first treatment, and after three treatments the practitioner dismissed her as well, which I then thought was rushing matters somewhat; but time has proven she was right, for my daughter has enjoyed almost perfect health ever since. She has strength to do anything she wishes to do, whereas at the time she embraced Christian Science she could not stand alone long enough to comb her hair.
