PROGRESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the March 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE seed of Christian Science was planted in Duluth by students who had imbibed their first ideas of it at Oconto, Wis., where, as has already been related in these columns, the first church building of the denomination was erected and dedicated. The unselfish devotion of that noble band who amid much discouragement tarried the building of that first church to completion, has ever remained an inspiration to those who brought the truth to Duluth.

The first meetings in Duluth of this kind were held in the year 1884, at the homes of those interested at that time. The attendance was between ten and fifteen for a while, but gradually the number increased, until in 1889 it was thought advisable to hold regular services in a hall. Meetings were continued in halls, until 1898, when it was voted to build a church edifice. A lot between 9th and 10th avenues east on Superior street was leased at a nominal rental, and the construction of the church commenced. It was finished the same year, and under date of Nov. 6, 1898, Mrs. Eddy sent the following dedicatory message:—
