Testimonies of Healing

[Translated from the German]

From the September 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am greatly pleased that the opportunity is afforded me to give expression to my deep-felt gratitude and to testify to my having been healed of paralysis through Christian Science one year ago. On May 27, 1911, a serious spinal disease suddenly manifested itself, and a couple of days later the whole of the lower part of my body became paralyzed. Upon the advice of a physician I was taken to the hospital, where a very long illness was predicted, and I tried to be reconciled to what seemed to be my fate. The functions of the body were so much affected that artificial means were resorted to, and toward the end of July an operation became necessary because of conditions arising from this treatment. Then I became afflicted with bed-sores, and despite the fact that all possible devices were employed, these spots, as well as the wound resulting from the operation, did not heal.

One day I had a visit from an aunt, who, on beholding my pitiful condition, asked whether I felt inclined to seek healing from God. She told me a few things about Christian Science and I declared myself willing to accept its help, since it alone offered any prospect of recovery. My uncle then asked a practitioner to take my case; but she could give me only absent treatment, as she was about to leave on a journey. Nevertheless, my condition immediately began to improve, the sores slowly healed, the sense of feeling returned, and after two weeks I was able to move my toes a little. Toward the end of August, four large stones were expelled from the bladder without the slightest pain, an occurrence which I did not mention to the physician for fear he would suggest another operation. The first of October I attempted to walk in the go-cart; in November I did so, using a cane for support, and on Feb. 4 I was dismissed from the hospital. Up to that time, only absent treatment had been given, and I had very little understanding of the workings of Truth; but now I called upon the practitioner, and it was not long before I was able to discard the cane.

Since September, 1912, I have again been working in a large concern; and I would like to add that during the period when I had treatment in Christian Science, hardly any material remedy was used. There were frequent examinations, and the physicians were surprised at the sudden change for the better, whereas the attending physician had told my uncle that there was little hope of my health ever being sufficiently restored to enable me to make a living; but through God's help things have taken a different turn.
