Although it is nearly fourteen years since Christian Science came into my life, I have never before availed myself of the great privilege of sending my testimony to our periodicals. Yet this is one of the ways provided whereby Christian Scientists can help themselves and others, and I now, therefore, gladly avail myself of the opportunity.
When Christian Science came to my rescue, I had been searching for years to find the key which would solve the world problems. I had been awakened from a condition of indolent apathy toward the needs of humanity, and had been deeply impressed by the sorrow and injustice in the world. For years I had taken my part in trying to establish a greater degree of justice, and this I, in common with many others, had expected to see accomplished by means of social, economic, and political reforms. I had not learned at that time the importance of the fact that reforms are results of individual regeneration. The common religious efforts to reform the world had ceased to interest me. It appeared to me that they were not accomplishing fundamental changes, and I realized that nothing less than radical reconstruction would suffice. In looking back over this period of my life I can recognize its hopelessness, and by contrast the joy of present existence through the aid of Christian Science. The experience of working for unpopular reforms was salutary, however, and I would not have had it otherwise.
When Christian Science with its bright rays of promise finally dawned upon me, I had reached the point of disillusionment in my efforts at reform. The first clear glimpse revealed to me that Christian Science is the remedy for all ills that beset mankind, whether as individuals or collectively, and this glorious gospel has unfolded to me ever since the unlimited possibilities of right thinking. Christian Science by degrees forced me to recast all my theories; it opened up a totally new outlook on life and set my activities at work in new directions. Before this truth found me I had already, in common with most men interested in world problems, learned to admit the equal rights of woman with man. It was therefore with joy that I could hail at once as my Leader the noble woman who is the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy.
