Testimonies of Healing

As nearly as I can tell, it was in...

From the September 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As nearly as I can tell, it was in September, 1911, that I first heard of Christian Science, and words fail to express my thankfulness to God for it. We are likewise grateful to Mrs. Eddy for bringing to mankind this better understanding of divine Truth and Love. When a child I was taught that if we were good and loved God and Christ Jesus, we would go to heaven when we died. I tried to be good as best I knew how, but was subject to sorrow and sickness in many forms. As I grew older I longed to live a Christian life, and many parts of the Bible I loved, but other parts filled me with terror.

I had not read far into Mrs. Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," when the spiritual uplift was more beautiful than words can express. I could not help trying to spread the good news right and left, I so longed for others to be blessed as I was; but soon I was advised not to give out this truth till I could see some desire to receive it. This seemed to take part of the joy from me, until I understood how much I had to learn and to unlearn. I have realized protection from danger many times, and have been healed of physical ills, including severe colds, coughs, stomach trouble, and chronic catarrh.

One day I was taken suddenly ill while doing needlework at a lady's house, but I stayed my full time, then came home and went to bed, seemingly in a high fever and great pain. I got Science and Health and held fast to the truth while reading it. In the morning when I tried to get up, the error almost caused me to lose consciousness, so that I dropped back on the bed for a short time; but by God's help I rose again, got breakfast and did other small duties, and then kept my engagement for a day's needlework. By the next morning I was quite well.
