PROGRESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the September 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN considering the waymarks of the spiritual growth of Third Church of Christ, Scientist, New York City, it is gratifying to note that there has been a steady to note that there has been a steady gain in the understanding of opportunity for greater usefulness in the field, a recognition of surrounding conditions outgrown, and lastly the necessity of establishing a building fund as a basis for a permanent home.

In November, 1891, eleven persons who were earnest students of Christian Science began to hold regular services at the home of one of their number on West Fourth Street, one of the oldest districts in New York City, known as Greenwich Village. Mid-week meetings for study were held at the home of another student up town. At this time The Christian Science Publishing Society was furnishing Sunday schools throughout the field with lessons on the order of the International Bible Lessons, using their Scriptural references and adding references from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

In 1892 a room was secured in the Hamilton Bank Building on 125th Street, and in 1893 a larger room in the same building provided more comfortable accommodations for this band of consecrated, earnest workers. At this time too a Sunday school was started, and it has steadily grown in the understanding of Truth and Love. Its ever ready and generous response is an inspiring and helpful addition to the church organization, and many important church activity ties are the outgrowth of the Sunday school work.
