LAW AND ITS APPLICATION

From the September 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IT has been truly stated that all logic to be logical must have a basic or fundamental truth as its foundation. To reason correctly we must start free from error, for if the premise is faulty, our entire reasoning is without foundation in fact or structure. Christian Science, in order to be what Mrs. Eddy has so properly called it, must be founded upon unvarying Principle, or it can in no sense be scientific. unvarying Principle is expressed by law, and law in its highest sense is a rule of action which is obligatory. We arrive at this definition of law only when we know that it is an expression of an underlying and all-embracing infinite intelligence, and this intelligence Christian Science denominates as God. So to start right or logical reasoning we must always start from the premise that God is.

Because there are those who deny the very existence of God, there are some who will at this point say, "It is all right to make your start there, providing you can prove your assertion that God exists." We may recall what the Master said to the followers of John the Baptist, when they were sent to him to inquire if he was the Messiah who was to come, "Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard," and similarly reply to the doubting thought.

Law, as has been stated, is a rule of action which is obligatory. If we look off into the unclouded night we see law applied, and even to our limited senses we know it is universal. There is no chaotic condition existing there; all is harmony of action. The celestial bodies revolve continually and perpetually in their perfect orbits, governed by law universally applied and enforced. We feel no fear of anything happening to disrupt that perfect plan which we behold, nor do we doubt its continuous and perpetual operation. Then let us ask ourselves: Whence comes this law? To what is it applied? How is it maintained?
