Our Master, Jesus the Christ, said in his Sermon on the Mount, "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you." This injunction seemed utterly impracticable, for I felt that whereas I might forgive a wrong done unto me, I would never be able quite to forget it. One day I read a reprint from Der Herold der Christian Science entitled "The Impersonal Nature of Evil," in which I found good, clear thoughts regarding the powerlessness of evil. Through the earnest study of this article I was enabled to see that an individual who had deeply offended me was in reality God's child, hence that evil thoughts could have no power over her. It became possible for me to pardon her from within my heart and to think of her without rancor, for now I knew that "no power can withstand divine Love," as our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says on page 224 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
The result of the mental work done in Christian Science was that some time ago the person in question expressed the desire to see me in order that we might become reconciled. I said to her, "I had to tell you the truth at the time in order to help you, and I meant well." "Yes," she answered, "I have come to see that." This experience meant a great deal to me, and I was deeply grateful for it. I feel greatly indebted to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who labored so faithfully, despite all seeming difficulties, that she might give to the world the Christian Science literature which is proving such a help. I am especially grateful for Science and Health, through which we gain a right concept of God and man.
There are also beautiful instances of physical healing of which I might tell. Through treatment in Christian Science I was healed of attacks of severe pain which recurred every year. Before I knew of Christian Science I was afflicted with an inflamed condition of the eye (conjunctivitis), and a specialist whom I consulted told me that I should come to his clinic, as an operation was the only means whereby I could be helped. I then heard of Christian Science through a dear friend, and was freed of this trouble within a short time. I am also very thankful for the inspiring services and testimony meetings, from which I always derive strength for the fulfilling of my duties, and I lovingly think of those who have shown me the way of Christian Science and have helped me to walk in it.
