Testimonies of Healing

Although words seem inadequate...

From the August 1918 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although words seem inadequate to express my thankfulness to God and my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for the many blessings that have come to me and to the members of my family through Christian Science, I am sending this testimony with the hope that it will benefit some one who may be seeking the truth. Twelve years ago I was in a street car wreck, which left me in a deplorable condition. My collar bone, right ankle, knee, and three ribs were broken, the right hip was dislocated, and in addition thereto I sustained several internal injuries. I was confined to bed for six months, receiving the best medical aid that could be had, but two specialists predicted that I would be confined to a rolling chair for the rest of my life.

After two years of almost unbearable suffering, a lady advised me to try Christian Science. I asked her what this teaching was, and was told of a beautiful healing she had witnessed, also of Mrs. Eddy and her discovery of this saving truth. Without the knowledge of my family, who were opposed to this religion, I asked for help from a practitioner and received absent treatment. There was instantaneous relief, and in a short time I left the rolling chair and began to walk with crutches. Like a great many others, however, I did not understand the healing process, and that in order to receive my full blessing, I should keep up the treatment longer; I therefore stopped the treatment and struggled on, reading and studying as best I could. At the end of three years I was able to discard the crutches, much to the amazement of the physicians and my family.

Later, complications set in, among them gallstones, acute indigestion, and bronchial trouble. Again my husband called in the best physicians he could find. After their examination they informed him that an operation was my only chance for relief, and that even this was almost hopeless. When the doctors left, the thought came to me like a flash of light that God had sent His messenger to me over three years before, and would heal me. I told my family that I would not be treated any more by the doctors, but would rely on Christian Science. They thought me delirious and said nothing; but right then, nine years ago, I grasped the promises of God. I sent for a practitioner, who gave me absent treatment and three days later came to see me. In about half an hour after he left I got up, dressed without any help, then went to the dining room and ate a hearty meal, after having been confined to my bed for three weeks with no food except a little gruel.
