I have known of Christian Science ever since childhood, and have had many proofs of God's unfailing care. So much benefit has been received from reading the testimonies in the Journal and the Sentinel, and I have so many things to be grateful for, that I must give to others if I would receive blessings.
Last July our little son, aged five years, was run over by an automobile and dragged for sixteen feet. When his father picked him up he was unconscious. His head was cut in several places, the right ear torn half way loose from his head, and his left leg broken just below the hip. His father not being interested in Christian Science had him taken to a hospital. After the leg was set, and the other injuries were properly attended to, however, I asked permission to have Christian Science treatment, and his father consented. A practitioner was called the same night, and the next morning the inflammation and swelling had abated. There was a great deal of fear manifested, and the doctors in charge told me it was the worst break there was recorded in their books; that we would have to be extremely careful of the boy when he was able to stand on the leg, because it might break again. The first X-ray pictures showed that the leg had not been properly set; hence extra weights were added in the hope of pulling the bone into place; and the splint had to be changed, so he was put under ether again. A few days later another X-ray picture was taken and this showed that the leg was no better than at first, so the doctors told me I could take him home and they would reset it there. This was done; but there was still the same trouble—the bones were overlapping about an inch.
I was beginning to feel discouraged. Some said my boy would be a cripple always; others said that if he ever got up he would break the leg over again. The doctor wanted to break it the third time and reset it, but I could not give my consent. I telephoned to the Christian Science practitioner and told him the particulars; and we decided not to reset the leg but hold to the truth that perfect healing would be brought about through the operation of God's law.
