In recognition of benefits received from Christian Science, I desire to acknowledge with gratitude my sincere and loyal adherence to Truth. After two of Chicago's most noted specialists on nervous diseases had declared their powerlessness to help me, I was lovingly led to Christian Science. In 1895 these physicians said I was suffering from neurasthenia, a disease then considered incurable by the medical profession. They agreed that an operation was imperative, and I submitted to the ordeal, with the result that I was "nothing bettered," but continued to grow weaker. I was always needing a doctor, and traveling, resorting to electric treatment and other supposed means of relief. I saw that I was not gaining, yet never wholly gave up hope, although the verdict of the physicians was that I could not be healed.
Soon after this I met a valued friend, one whom I trusted although my faith in people was nearly gone, since each one told me of something different to do. This friend asked me why I did not try Christian Science. I told her I would gladly try anything which would not require me to go to any more people; I was ready to read anything, or investigate any legitimate method of healing, but was tired of "trying" things. It is sufficient to add that I eagerly procured Science and Health, and from the time I started to read the first page my regeneration began—I literally devoured that book, and was quickly helped, though my health returned slowly, for many faults had to be corrected. I was, however, very happy in the new life which opened up, and my healing has been permanent. Grief has been overcome and self-will is yielding to the one Mind.
I am grateful to all who have helped me, and for class instruction; I am also thankful to be a member of The Mother Church, as well as the local church. I am grateful to the Publishing Society for our beloved Leader's writings and for our periodicals and daily newspaper, which we could not do without.—Evanston, Ill.
