The traveler in a mountainous...

From the November 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The traveler in a mountainous country pauses occasionally to look back at the peaks already surmounted. Then, encouraged by the view of what has already been accomplished, he is able to press onward with renewed energy. Thus the writer of this testimony would pause to look back over the uplifting experiences of fifteen years in Christian Science.

I came into Christian Science while a high school student, through the healing of my eyesight. A competent oculist had pronounced mine one of the worst cases of astigmatism ever encountered in his experience. Yet I laid aside my glasses after three weeks of Christian Science treatment. I have enjoyed the best of eyesight ever since and freedom from headaches, which I had had almost constantly for a year before my healing. During this experience the practitioner explained to me the unreality of a personal devil and a few weeks later I suddenly realized that I had lost a mental picture of a personal God. I was at first dismayed, then uplifted by the overwhelming consciousness that God is Mind. I now see that this clearing of my mental vision was an indispensable part of the healing.

At the birth of my first child terrifying conditions presented themselves. I was unconscious for twenty-four hours, going through eleven convulsions. The physician on the case wished to be allowed to sacrifice the unborn babe. However, those who were Scientists in the family took a stand with the practitioner for Truth. Toward morning the spiritual light dawned for all of us. The babe was brought into the world safely and by night most of the discordant conditions had cleared up. To-day my little boy is a perfectly normal child of seven years. Had it not been for Christian Science he would never have been born. In this connection I would like to add that previous to the baby's coming I turned my face steadily away from all human laws and fears. I had my reward, for I have never had any memory of suffering in this experience. As the practitioner put it, I was "not in the turmoil."
