Testimonies of Healing

Again and again we are admonished...

From the December 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Again and again we are admonished in the Psalms, "Praise ye the Lord," and to obey the admonition because it, opens our eyes to God's great goodness and ever available love. Even as a child I desired to understand something more about our life here with its complexities and contradictions, but before I left school I had begun to doubt the truth of the Bible teachings, as there seemed so much evidence to contradict them. At the university I studied philosophy, hoping to gain some clearer light on the meaning of life, but the net result of it all seemed to be that a thousand new and abstruse problems were added to the old and obvious ones. Some years later, when placed in a difficult situation, I turned to Christian Science for help and began to attend the services of a branch church. The testimonies given by those who had been healed by this teaching and the great happiness and joy of all in their religion were to me convincing proof that here was the truth.

Learning that sickness originates in fear and false beliefs and can never come from God, who is infinite Love, I was soon free from many other ailments, including sick headaches and sore throats. After studying Christian Science for about a year it was necessary for me to cross the Atlantic, and I knew that my faith and understanding would be put to a severe test, as I had always been an exceptionally bad sailor. The voyage was a rough one and the fears and conversation of the other passengers did not make things easier; but claiming the protection of God's law I was perfectly well throughout and always remember the experience with gratitude as a clear proof of the all-power of divine Love.

Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 467), "Reasoning from cause to effect in the Science of Mind, we begin with Mind, which must be understood through the idea which expresses it and cannot be learned from its opposite, matter." Thus she points out the solution of all the world's most baffling problems. Human philosophies are forever trying to understand Mind through "its opposite, matter," and that is why they lead nowhere and can never satisfy us. All that we can say of Christian Science is quite inadequate to express the daily, hourly blessings which it brings to us in our home, in our work, and in all that we do. I am grateful for the new understanding of the Bible which it brings, grateful for the privilege of class instruction and the annual association meetings which follow these, grateful above all to Mrs. Eddy, our beloved Leader, who, through her consecration and love, established her church on so sure a foundation.—
