During the summer of 1919 I was in bed for four weeks, suffering severely from inflammation of the bladder and adjacent parts. I had heard of Christian Science before my illness, but did not have enough faith in its healing efficacy, and thus, in order to quiet the severe pain, was forced to resort to opium. The physician warned me that if I was not extremely careful and always dressed warmly I would never get rid of the sickness. As soon as I was able to get up my first walk was to a Wednesday evening meeting, and I am, in so far as my duties permit, a constant attendant at the church services and meetings. It became more and more apparent to me in what darkness and ignorance of God I had been living.
Suddenly in September of the same year the pains again appeared. I endeavored to help myself, trusting in my new-found faith in God, but as the suffering increased I went to a practitioner and requested her to help me. This lady explained to me in loving and clear words that we are all God's children, and what this means to us. I went to the practitioner bent over with pain but with hope of healing, and left her a completely new and healthy person, with a still firmer faith in God and His almighty love and goodness. Since then hardly a pain has been felt, nor am I obliged to dress warmly. I realized the meaning of the Bible quotation. "In my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me." I am so grateful to God for His great, infinite love and goodness; also grateful to our dear, revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy. —Berlin, Germany.
