From the December 1920 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Inherent in human nature is the deep-seated desire to know and understand causation. At the age of thirteen I was taken regularly from a denominational Sunday school to attend the lectures of an ethical society and then and there began a mental chemicalization on the subject of religion that never ended until the ceaseless and persistent questions thus aroused were fully and finally answered in Christian Science.

When in the midst of a great grief, in excessive fear for another's well-being, and in physical bondage myself, seemingly without God or hope in immortality, with the Bible a mere historical record instead of the solace it has since become, with no help from any source so far as I could see, I turned to Christian Science in earnest and found therein the Christ, Truth, that is continually solving every problem and answering every question, and that has turned my world of sorrow and misery into one of hope and rejoicing.

I followed the course from childhood, when my test of God was an orthodox prayer to a personal savior for the gratification of a childish whim, until I reached the phase of thinking that all prayer was futile and absurd. The study of Christian Science quickly indicated that neither viewpoint was correct but that true prayer is a demonstrable knowledge of God or Mind, the simple recognition of government by Principle, which manifests itself in harmonious, whole activity, the proofs of which destroyed for me entirely the merely ethical aspect of the words of Christ Jesus and revealed instead the spiritual purport and metaphysical interpretation of both his words and his works.
