As the testimonies in the Sentinel and Journal have been a great help to me during the last few years I send mine in the hope that it may also help others. I became interested in Christian Science in the spring of 1915 upon my arrival in England from India, but did not buy "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy until the autumn of 1916, and then only found time to read it occasionally, but I loved it at once, especially the chapter, "Atonement and Eucharist."
The following spring, after struggling with a cough for many weeks, which got steadily worse, I succumbed. My temperature was very high and, after a night's intense suffering, I sent for a doctor, who diagnosed the case as congestion of the lungs. On the third day, after faithfully obeying his instructions and taking his prescribed medicines, I decided to send for a Christian Science practitioner and to stop taking medicine of any kind. The practitioner called the following afternoon and gave me treatment and, with either present or absent treatment every day, within the week I was up and about again, though still feeling weak. Soon afterwards I went away for a fortnight's rest and change, and it was then that I earnestly began to study the Lesson-Sermon every day, and to love reading the Bible, which I had put away after leaving school as of no use or help to me in life. I returned home feeling a new creature indeed. Gradually I began putting my new-found knowledge and understanding to the test, and in November witnessed the healing of my little daughter in one day of gastritis, to which she had been subject for many years, always having been ill for many days when she had an attack. We were very grateful, and what impressed me most at the time was how little we had to do, as God does it all for us.
In the spring of the year following my first healing, all the symptoms of congestion of the lungs tried to manifest themselves again, but this time I had sufficient understanding to keep me out of bed, and to do my household and other duties, and at the end of a week had one treatment, after which I was quite well again. And I now know that my healing is permanent. As for a bowel trouble of long standing, during the summer holidays we spent seven and a half weeks with a sister who is not a Christian Scientist, and I was able to eat everything that was provided, and to digest it, and was troubled with only one short attack of pain, which was very soon overcome.
