It is with a sense of deep gratitude to God and to Mrs. Eddy that I give this testimony in proof of what Christian Science has done for me. It is nearly eleven years now since I first appealed to Christian Science when in great need of physical help, and when the only hope held out to me was an operation. From the time I was fourteen years old I had suffered from stomach trouble, which at eighteen was accompanied by hemorrhages. My life was almost despaired of for many days but I finally began to recover slowly, after which by observing a very careful diet for a long time my stomach seemed perfectly healed. For a few years I enjoyed perfect health, but finally the trouble reappeared.
After treatment at home for over two months the doctors advised my husband to have an operation performed. I was placed under the care of one of the best physicians and surgeons in that part of the United States. Fortunately it was decided to wait a few days before operating, to see if I would not respond to treatment, as the operation was considered a very critical one, and one to be avoided, if possible, especially in my very frail condition, as I seemed to have so little vitality. I was in the hospital and with relatives for four months, during which time I gained strength very, very slowly, in fact just to walk around the house seemed the greatest effort, and this sense of weakness continued for several months. The doctor told me when leaving that should I have another attack I would have to be operated on immediately to prevent the development of a much more serious condition. Therefore, when it did come back in about two years, my husband said we must go and have an operation at once, but I had heard so much of Christian Science in the meantime that, although suffering intensely at the time, I said, "No; I want to try Christian Science," and asked him to call a practitioner. This was done, and I was relieved immediately and in a short time was healed. I gained strength very rapidly, and what a joy and blessing it was to get around and do things without that terrible exhaustion.
Since then we have had many proofs that "Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind, and Truth destroys only what is untrue," as Mrs. Eddy says beginning on page 142 of Science and Health. Two cases of appendicitis, also Spanish influenza, inflammatory rheumatism, measles, chicken pox, and colds have been healed in our family through the application of this truth which makes free. I have not words with which to express the gratitude I feel to God, and to Mrs. Eddy, who labored so lovingly and unceasingly to bring the truth within our comprehension. I am also grateful for the periodicals, which were established by our Leader to benefit all mankind.— Sparks, Nevada.
